Industry and Careers
Every workplace in Ontario with more than five employees is legally required to plan and put into practice an occupational health and safety policy. Almost all industries need personnel with in-depth, applied knowledge of OHS.

OHS roles are found in public and private workplace settings, including:

  • Local government and other public sector organizations

  • a graduate of our Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (or equivalent)
  • an experienced occupational health and safety practitioner
  • in charge of directing OHS management systems in your workplace

What Will You Learn?

After completing this certificate, you will be able to do the following:

  • Apply accident theory and analysis
  • Advise on ergonomic issues
  • Implement hazard evaluation and control techniques
  • Execute OHS practices in a variety of workplace contexts, including: construction, health care facilities, retail outlets, offices, utilities, forestry and mining
  • Manage fire and radiation safety

Courses are drawn from Toronto Metropolitan University’s Bachelor of Applied Science in Occupational and Public Health (BASc). Courses completed as part of this certificate may be recognized towards the completion of the BASc. By completing this program after the Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, and then continuing on to the Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety Leadership, you will meet the educational requirements to write the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP) exam to become a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP).

What is advanced safety management?
Advanced safety management is a specialized area of OHS that involves the study of different theories of how accidents occur, international safety systems, and other knowledge and skills essential for controlling or eliminating workplace hazards.

Can I get Transfer Credits for courses I’ve taken at other institutions or for work experience?
You can apply for a Transfer Credit if you have taken the same course at another post-secondary institution.

Note: there’s no guarantee your application for Transfer Credits will be accepted.
