Online Learning vs. Virtualized Learning

Online Learning

  • Specifically and purposefully designed to be online (involves a dedicated team working on the course design for six to eight months)
  • Can take class anytime, anywhere
  • Entire course available at once
  • Works well for learners who prefer flexibility, the ability and freedom to work at their own pace, and receive feedback on their own time
  • Engage in online and live discussions with an instructor and students
  • Includes multimedia elements such as game-based activities, virtual simulations, and self-assessments

Virtualized Learning

  • Created from in-person class content as a result of COVID-19
  • Must attend scheduled classes
  • Course content delivered week to week
  • Works well for learners who like a structured classroom schedule, lecture learning, real-time discussions, and immediate feedback
  • Engage in live discussions with an instructor and students
  • Includes live lectures via Zoom, pre-recorded videos, visuals, group discussions, and readings in a virtual classroom
