Start Your Degree Early

Many of our certificates include degree-credit courses that can be applied toward a future degree at Toronto Metropolitan University. By starting your studies online from your home country, you can begin earning credits right away — before arriving in Canada.

In some cases, credits earned through an online pathway certificate could reduce the time in Canada needed to complete a Bachelor's degree from four years to three, saving a full year of living expenses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I transfer my certificate credits?

Yes. Credits earned in our degree-credit certificates can be applied toward a future degree program at TMU, helping you fast-track your academic journey and lower your overall costs.

Do I need a study permit?

No, you do not need a study permit to take our courses online from outside of Canada. If you are in Canada, and the certificate program is delivered fully online, then you do not need a study permit. You will need another valid immigration status, such as a visitor or worker visa.

Are these programs eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)?

Fully online programs are not PGWP eligible. Our in-person PGWP eligible certificate program for international students is currently on pause. Please email us iapps@torontomu.ca if you have any questions about opportunities to study in-person.

Where can I find more information about a specific certificate?

Each certificate program has its own page on The Chang School website with full course listings, admission requirements, and tuition details. You can also email iapps@torontomu.ca for personalized guidance.

What does online learning look like?

Our online courses include both synchronous learning (with live scheduled lectures) and asynchronous learning (where you engage with the course material on your own schedule). The format varies by course, so check the individual course description for details.

What if I want to take an online course from my home country, but the course lists an in-person exam requirement?

If you take an online course that has an in-person final exam, you can arrange to take the exam at an off-site location near you. Please see the Off-Campus Invigilation FAQ on this page for more information, and email us at iapps@torontomu.ca if you have any questions about finding an approved external invigilator near you.
