Course Description

This course examines the world???s first total war, one that mobilized entire societies and transformed them in the process. It approaches the conflict from diverse perspectives, drawing upon social, cultural, and political history, as well as works of fiction and film. Major topics include the campaigns in the east and west, the trench experience, the mobilization of the home front and role of women, revolutionary upheavals, the targeting of civilian populations, and the postwar settlement.
