Course Description

This is a course for people who would love to increase their enjoyment of music by learning to sight read. Throughout the term we will learn our way around the staff, clefs, key signatures, intervals, rhythm, metre, and basic music notation. In addition to written work, we will learn techniques of sight singing using Solfège and other methods of ear training. Classes will feature musical and rhythmic drills that are both fun and helpful in lifting the music off the page and into our bodies.

Although many of our drills will involve singing, it is not necessary to be a “singer” to participate. These techniques are also useful for instrumentalists. By the end of the term, participants should be able to sing or play simple melodies, accurately reproducing the notes and rhythms.
