Course Description

Ali Smith began her Seasonal Quartet of novels in 2016 with the intention of publishing a book a year that would respond to the social and political situation of the UK post-Brexit. But everything began to change in the winter of 2019 with the COVID crisis. This course looks at Smith’s four novels, Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer and it’s coda, Companion Piece, to look at how she used fiction to respond to the isolation, fear and social upheaval that Britain and the world face with Brexit, the Refugee Crisis and COVID.
