Course Description

Melodrama, characterized by high emotionalism and archetypes of villain, victim, and hero, had roots in the late 1700's, enjoyed a resurgence in the 1930's and has influenced modern film and soap opera. With exercises and scenes, we'll trace melodrama's broad acting styles to open the actor to deeper emotional and physical playing. Playwriting students will find exploration of structure useful for their work with form, building tension, conflict, and characterization.
