Course Description
This course introduces the student to the principles of microbiology. Topics include the history of microbiology, a survey of the different types of microorganisms, prokaryotic cell structure and function, microbial nutrition and growth, microbial metabolism and its applications, and bacterial genetics and gene expression. An introduction to bacterial gene expression will also be covered. The laboratory exercises complement the lectures and introduce the student to basic microbiological techniques and applications.Notes
Note: Attendance at labs is mandatory. Labs begin the first week of classes. You will need to activate your Ryerson email account in order to receive communication from your lab instructor.
Come prepared for your lab. You will need a lab coat, safety glasses or goggles, nitrile gloves, and a lab notebook. You should dress appropriately: no shorts, no skirts, no sandals, no open toed or open heeled shoes, and no high heels.
